Pronunciation
We are so glad that you have enrolled in Foundational Korean: Pronunciation! We hope that over the next four weeks you not only enjoy learning more about pronunciation patterns in Korean, but that you are able to fully understand some of the frustrating differences between simple letter pronunciation teaching and more complex pronunciation patterns in real spoken language. We have seen many students over the years struggle with articulating these discrepancies or even recognizing them outright. For example, the surname 김 /kim/ and the food item 김 /gim/ are NOT pronounced the same way despite being spelled identically! Moreover, the vowel symbol 이 is actually pronounced differently because it falls between consonants rather than being word initial or final! These two examples are just a preview of the detailed word of pronunciation that you are about to learn in this courses. So get ready for a wild ride into what are likely patterns you instinctively know in your native language, but haven't formally learned about and are thus unable to recognize or articulate when confronted with spelling in 한글 and actual pronunciation in Korean speech!
