조선 is the name given to the first kingdom in Korea, however in modern times, it refers to the Joseon Dynasty which began in 1392 and ended in 1897. The meaning of this name in Chinese characters (朝鮮) is "pristine morning". This is where the English term "Land of the Morning Calm" comes from when referring to Korea. Many of the people, traditions, customs, etc. of the Joseon Dynasty are what permeates our perception of modern Korea today.
