The Survival Korean Team
Time: 4 weeks
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Skills: Reading, Listening
Complex human social orders, patriarchal traditions, and very elaborate Confucian philosophical heritage has resulted in a lot of different ways to address people, including the people most closest to you: family. Rather than use their given names or address family directly, very specific relationship terms are used. However, the closer that non-biologically related people are, family relationship names can be used to create a more communal bond among one another. It can sound complicated but that's what Survival Korean is here for - to help you learn how to address and greet people in the most appropriate ways. We will start Lesson 1 by looking at family relationship names so you can talk about your family and ask about the families of others! Let's begin!

Classmates and Coworkers
Talking with classmates and coworkers can be complicated. While family member relationships are often immutable, this isn't the case with people from school or the office. Moreover, there are often numerous ways you can address someone depending on how you know them and the context a conversation is taking place in.

Dating and Relationships
Like we saw in Lessons 1 and 2, how we address people depends on numerous factors: some obvious, others very subtle. Dating and Relationship terms are no different; the words used are a reflection of very specific nuance. Of course, there are also multiple possible terms and forms of address. With that said, let's begin Lesson 3!

Meeting New People
While we spend most of our days talking with people we know from our family, friends, and coworkers, we also meet people that we do not know at stores, on public transporation, over the phone, etc. Addressing them appropriately is not only a sign of proper courtesy, but also of language knowledge. In Lesson 4, we will learn just how to address people that you do not know but will interact with in your daily lives!
